Pretty alarming stuff — especially if you've just spent a few thousand pounds on one, or you've been saving up to get one installed.
 
Here's the thing. Most of what's being said is taken wildly out of context, based on outdated information, or just completely wrong. I've been in the industry for over 15 years. Here at Eco Fires and Stoves, we've installed thousands of wood burners across the South. And like many others in the trade, I'm getting fed up with good people making bad decisions based on scaremongering and misinformation.
 
So let's go through the six biggest myths surrounding wood burners, clear up a few things based on actual facts, and by the end you'll know more about wood burning stoves than the journalists writing the headlines.
 
Myth 1: "Wood Burners Are the Biggest Cause of UK Air Pollution"
 
This is probably the most repeated claim. It's based on a real statistic — which is exactly what makes it so dangerous.
 
Back in 2019, DEFRA published their Clean Air Strategy. In it, they cited that domestic burning accounts for 38% of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) across the UK. Newspapers latched onto it. Headlines were written. Panic spread.
 
But here's what nobody told you.
 
That 38% figure came from a government study carried out in 2015, and it massively overestimated the amount of wood being burned in UK homes. When a much larger, more robust study was done in 2019, the real figure came in at less than a third of the original estimate. That brings the actual contribution of domestic burning down to roughly 13% — a massive drop.
 
And it gets better. That original 38% lumped together:
- Bonfires
- Garden incinerators
- Wildfires
- Barbecues
- Open fires
- Stoves from 20 years ago

The old stoves were tested at full nominal output, maximum burn rate, worst-case scenario. It's like comparing a car doing 30mph in clean air to a stove being deliberately pushed to its limit.
 
Then there's what the study didn't measure. A diesel car's total emissions include:
- Exhaust fumes (measured)
- Tyre wear (not measured)
- Brake dust (not measured)
- Road surface abrasion (not measured)
 
Anyone who understands cars knows tyre and brake emissions often exceed exhaust pollution. And that's completely ignored.
 
Then there's dispersal. A car exhaust pumps fumes out at child height, straight into the air people breathe. A stove exhausts through the chimney to above roof height, where pollutants disperse harmlessly before reaching ground level.
 
The truth: The comparison is scientifically meaningless. It's designed to grab headlines, not inform anyone.
 
Myth 3: "Wood Burners Cause Dangerous Indoor Air Pollution"
 
Some early research claimed homes with wood burners have up to three times the indoor air pollutants of homes without one. Scary stuff — until you look at how the research was done.
 
Those studies placed a single air quality meter next to the stove, away from the fireplace. But they didn't account for:
- Background pollution from cooking
- Changes in air movement inside the property
- The fact that a properly installed stove draws air in for combustion and never leaks back into the room
 
More recent, better-controlled research tells a completely different story. A correctly installed, modern wood burner has minimal effect on indoor air quality.
 
For context:
- Cooking a meal on a gas hob: up to 120 micrograms of pollution per cubic metre, elevated for hours
- Blowing out candles: 20-fold spike in particulates in one study
- Using an air fryer: particulate levels exceed safe limits for over two hours
- Wood burners, even when refueling with the door open: minimal change by comparison
 
The truth: A modern stove with adequate ventilation, correctly lined, and installed by a qualified engineer operates safely and efficiently. The key phrase is correctly installed. If someone quotes you a three-day installation for a grand, run.
 
Myth 4: "Burning Wood Isn't Carbon Neutral"
 
This comes up a lot from environmentally conscious people, and on the surface it makes sense — you're burning something and releasing CO2.
 
But it completely misunderstands how the carbon cycle works.
 
When a tree grows, it absorbs CO2 through photosynthesis. That carbon is locked inside the tree for its entire lifetime. Whether that tree falls in a forest, gets chopped down for timber, or is processed for firewood, it releases no more carbon than it already absorbed. Nothing new is added. It's a closed loop.
 
- Wood: Carbon was in the atmosphere, tree absorbed it, burning releases it back, net zero
- Gas, oil, coal: Carbon was locked underground for millions of years, burning releases it into the modern atmosphere, net positive

The truth: Wood burning is carbon neutral. Fossil fuels aren't. It's that simple.

This one probably bugs industry professionals the most. It lumps open fires — essentially a hole in the wall — together with 20 years of engineering progress.

Most UK firewood comes from deciduous woodlands on rotation cycles of around 60 years. Harvested, then regrown. That's what renewable means.
 
The real drivers of global deforestation are:
- Palm oil plantations
- Agricultural expansion
- Large-scale commercial timber
 
Blaming your log store for rainforest destruction isn't just wrong — it takes pressure off the industries that actually cause it.
